UK refuses to grant diplomatic status to the new EU ambassador
Updated 6th May: equivalent status granted | 21 Jan, A decision qualified ‘petty’ by the EU. However, Mr Raab and Number 10 are right.
Mr Joao Vale de Almeida is the EU’s ambassador to the UK. “The Foreign Office had resisted the idea, arguing the EU should not be treated like an independent nation.
But in a joint statement, the UK and EU announced ambassador Joao Vale de Almeida, would get “a status consistent with heads of missions of states”.
Readers will have noticed that a Status consistent with heads of missions of states doesn’t mean yet Diplomatic status.
Without entering into details of International Public Law, or EU treaties, we know the phone call prefix for the UK is +44, France is +33 and so on. Can anyone provide the international prefix for the “EU”?
In the DailyMail who reported the matter, we can read that:

The Guardian mentions that “Foreign Office says EU should not be treated as a nation-state, despite 142 countries granting bloc this status”. Well, this means nothing else than 142 governments and the Guardian should get back to school benches.
It is so by design since the very beginning of the construction of the EU that its ultimate goal is to merge and dilute all nation-states into one unified regime under Bruxelles’ technocratic machinery. It is also true this can’t happen without EU state-members who withdraw some of their sovereignty to this machine and accept this fusion to happen over time.
Yet, legally speaking the EU is not a nation-state and the diplomatic status can be granted only to people belonging to a state, not an organisation, be it international or even the EU.
