New US federal draft Bill: the “SAFE DATA Act”
Last month, a proposal for a consumer privacy bill was introduced in the US Senate.
What could become a new federal law is titled ‘‘Setting an American Framework to Ensure Data Access, Transparency, and Accountability Act’’ or, in short, the ‘‘SAFE DATA Act’’.

From Reason‘s perspective, we find it is worth noting for instance:
- the clarity of the language used (ie. accessibility)
- the protective provisions for consumers, whose rights can’t be waived for instance in an agreement made with a provider (read: imposed by a provider on an individual)
- a considerate approach to respect the languages of consumers in privacy policies
- the terminology used in Title II – Data Transparency, Integrity and Security, which pinpoints practical issues
- the provisions for internal controls – put by the law on Executives – or the protection of whistleblowers
- clear provisions for Enforcement of the Bill
